Global Solar Installations Forecast: BloombergNEF Predicts 584 GW – https://www.mvapulse.com/

⚡ Quick Read
The global solar energy landscape is undergoing a structural transition as the industry moves away from the unprecedented growth rates previously dominated by China. BloombergNEF (BNEF) has released its latest market outlook, projecting 584 GW of global solar installations for 2026. This figure marks a 10.8% decline from the 655 GW anticipated for 2025. The revised forecast reflects a more pronounced slowdown in the Chinese market than analysts initially anticipated, coupled with steady, organic growth in the rest of the world.
Data from BloombergNEF indicates that China, which deployed a staggering 383 GW of solar capacity in 2025, is expected to see a 29% decline to 271 GW in 2026. This contraction is attributed to market saturation and a strategic policy shift that is redirecting capital toward energy storage solutions rather than pure-play solar capacity expansion. In the first half of 2026, China installed approximately 71.8 GW, a sharp drop compared to the 212.2 GW recorded during the same period in 2025.
Conversely, markets outside of China are showing resilience. Global capacity outside of China is projected to reach 313 GW, slightly outperforming earlier expectations. Growth is particularly notable in emerging markets such as India, the Philippines, Nigeria, and Malaysia. In several of these regions, the expansion is driven almost exclusively by residential and commercial rooftop solar installations rather than utility-scale projects.
For EPC contractors and solar developers in India, these findings signal a shift in the investment climate. With utility-scale solar growth cooling in major global hubs, non-utility solar has emerged as the largest sector for renewable energy investment. Indian developers should note that the ‘chugging along’ growth in the Indian market is increasingly supported by decentralized solar applications. As global module supply chains adjust to China’s reduced domestic demand, Indian players may find more favorable pricing environments, though they must navigate the increasing complexity of integrating energy storage into project designs.
The industry is moving into a phase of maturity where ‘breakneck’ growth is being replaced by sustainable, diversified deployment. As the India renewable energy sector continues to scale, the focus will likely shift toward grid integration and the hybridization of solar with battery energy storage systems (BESS). Stakeholders should prepare for a market where residential and commercial segments provide a critical buffer against the volatility of large-scale utility tenders, ensuring long-term stability in the broader energy transition.
