Pepco has approved ConnectDER’s meter collar products for solar, battery storage and electric vehicle charging installations across its service territory in Washington, D.C., according to a report by Billy Ludt. The approval extends ConnectDER’s reach to a national footprint of 54 utilities serving nearly 40 million households, with additional utility expansion underway.
ConnectDER’s adapters connect directly to the existing meter socket on the exterior of a home. By creating a safe connection point at the meter, the devices remove the need for main panel upgrades, service upsizing, circuit relocations or added backup load panels and system controllers, which the company says can raise labor costs and extend project timelines.
Ivo Steklac, ConnectDER’s president and chief executive, said demand for residential solar, battery backup and electric vehicles in the District continues to grow, while older electrical infrastructure poses a physical obstacle that slows installations. He said approval of the adapters for exterior meter-socket installation means installers can avoid re-engineering entire panels and home wiring, allowing them to deliver clean energy resilience more efficiently while saving homeowners thousands of dollars in total costs and days of labor. Steklac added that this translates into greater installation capacity and fewer barriers, which he described as important for the District’s electrification goals.
The District’s clean energy market is driven by its Clean Energy DC mandates, which include a renewable portfolio standard with a dedicated 15% local solar carve-out. Its urban building stock, largely historic row homes with aging electrical infrastructure, often has 100-ampere electrical panels that require main service upgrades costing thousands of dollars before solar, battery storage or EV charging equipment can be interconnected.
Robin Dutta, executive director of the Chesapeake Solar and Storage Association, said the approval by Pepco DC is a significant win for District residents and installation companies, following dedicated work by several association members to pass enabling regulations. Dutta said the change makes solar and battery storage more accessible for everyday homeowners.
ConnectDER’s IslandDER MSA is designed specifically for whole-home backup and battery storage. It integrates a Microgrid Interconnect Device, current transformers, voltage sensing and real-time grid disconnect capability into a single compact device mounted outside at the meter. IslandDER is installed without reconfiguring panels or rerouting household circuits.
