Generate Capital and TurningPoint Energy held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new 3.5-MWac community solar project in Sandwich, Illinois, according to Solar Power World. The project is one of several community solar installations in Kendall County developed through the Illinois Adjustable Block Program, now called Illinois Shines.
The Sandwich site belongs to an eight-project, 34.5-MWac portfolio developed by TurningPoint Energy and financed, built, owned and operated by Generate Capital. The single-axis tracking system covers roughly 23 acres, and its bifacial panels are expected to produce more than 8 million kWh of clean electricity each year.
Construction finished in mid-2026 with prevailing-wage labor, and qualified workers were on site throughout the build. The project now supplies renewable energy and utility bill savings to 90 local subscribers, including residents and small businesses. Through Illinois Shines, it widens solar access for customers who may be unable to install panels on their own properties.
The site also uses agrivoltaic and pollinator-friendly land management, with sheep grazing to maintain vegetation and native flowering plants to support pollinators and biodiversity. According to the report, these practices are intended to improve soil health and show how renewable energy can coexist with agriculture and responsible land stewardship.
Peggy Flannery, Managing Director of Investments at Generate Capital, described community solar as an example of sustainable infrastructure delivering immediate benefits to the communities it serves. She said the company, working with TurningPoint Energy, is bringing locally generated power to Illinois communities and helping residents and small businesses lower energy costs, and that Generate is proud to invest in, build and operate such projects for the long term.
Salar Naini, President of TurningPoint Energy, said the project shows how thoughtfully developed energy infrastructure can create benefits beyond electricity generation. He said the partnership combines community solar with responsible land stewardship and creates long-term value for subscribers, host communities and the state’s broader clean energy transition.
