Italy’s solar output totaled 5.32 TWh in September 2026, marking a 27.1% rise versus the same month a year earlier, according to grid operator Terna‘s monthly electricity report. Solar represented 48.6% of renewable-source generation for the month, with year-on-year output growth of 1.14 TWh.
According to Terna, the gain stemmed largely from newly installed capacity, which delivered 731 GWh of additional generation, while better resource availability accounted for 404 GWh.
Renewables met 39.4% of national power demand in September, a 2.3% decrease relative to September 2025. Total net generation climbed 6.4% year on year. Renewable sources produced 10.94 TWh, edging up 0.6%, whereas non-renewable output reached 12.73 TWh, an 11.8% increase.
Power demand came to 27,765 GWh, up 6.5% from September 2025 and 8.4% from September 2024.
Renewable generation capacity expanded by 675 MW in September, exceeding the same month last year by 238 MW, or 54.5%. Across the first nine months of 2026, installed solar capacity rose by 4,834 MW, 18.6% above the 4,078 MW added during the corresponding period of 2025.
In the first nine months of 2026, Italy brought online 911 MW of nominal operating storage power capacity, versus 1,482 MW a year earlier, a drop of 572 MW, or 38.6%. Maximum usable storage capacity grew by 1,962 MWh, compared with 4,376 MWh in the same period of 2025, a decrease of 2,415 MWh, or 55.2%.
As of Sept. 30, 2026, Terna counted 984,831 active energy storage systems.
