Vikram Solar on track to start 9-GW TOPCon cell production in December – Power Peak Digest

Vikram Solar Limited said its 9-GW N-type Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) solar cell manufacturing facility at the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, is on schedule to produce its first cells in December 2026.
The full 9 GW will be commissioned in phases thereafter. The facility is being developed through the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, VSL Green Power Private Limited, on a nearly 200-acre integrated campus.
Import dependence
The company said the plant addresses India’s reliance on imported cells, which form the largest component of a module’s bill of materials. At full capacity, the facility will supply high-efficiency TOPCon cells for the majority of Vikram Solar’s module production. That will allow the company to offer modules made in India from cell to frame for utility-scale projects, rooftop installations, PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM, where domestic content requirements apply, as well as for global customers.
Vikram Solar intends to seek enlistment under List-II of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for cells produced at Gangaikondan in due course.
Roadmap
The cell plant is the second of three phases in the company’s integration roadmap at Gangaikondan. The first phase, a 6-GW module plant, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in August 2026. The third phase, a 9-GW ingot and wafer facility, has received board approval and is targeted for FY29. Within the cell phase, capacity is planned to expand to 12 GW.
Campus
On completion, Gangaikondan is expected to be one of the few sites in India where ingots, wafers, cells and modules are manufactured together. The campus is projected to provide more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. The company said co-locating the stages is intended to shorten supply cycles, tighten quality control and lower logistics costs.
Management view
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman & Managing Director, Vikram Solar, said: “Indian module makers, including us, have built their businesses around imported cells. Gangaikondan ends that for Vikram Solar. Cells are where the value, the technology and the risk in a module sit, and in December we start making them here. It is the most important step in our integration journey, and not the last: our roadmap runs from wafer to module, on Indian soil.”
