Vikram Solar Limited, a prominent name in India’s solar manufacturing sector, has announced that its state-of-the-art 9 Gigawatt (GW) N-type TOPCon solar cell manufacturing plant at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, will commence production in December 2026. This development marks a significant milestone in India’s solar manufacturing capabilities, with the facility on track to produce its first batch of solar cells as scheduled.
The development of this facility is seen as a critical step towards reducing India’s dependency on imported solar cells, which are essential components of solar modules. At full capacity, the Gangaikondan facility will not only support Vikram Solar’s module production but also benefit domestic programmes such as utility-scale projects, rooftop installations, PM Surya Ghar, and PM-KUSUM initiatives by adhering to domestic content requirements. Furthermore, it will cater to international customers looking to diversify their solar component supply chains.
The Gangaikondan plant represents the second phase of Vikram Solar’s integration strategy, following the inauguration of a 6 GW module plant on the same site in August 2026 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The company is also planning to establish a 9 GW ingot and wafer facility, which has received board approval and is targeted for completion by the fiscal year 2029. Future expansions to increase cell production capacity to 12 GW are also on the agenda.
Spanning nearly 200 acres, the Gangaikondan site is poised to become one of the few integrated solar manufacturing campuses in India, producing ingots, wafers, cells, and modules. The development is being executed by VSL Green Power Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary, and is expected to create over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. This co-location strategy promises enhanced quality control and reduced logistics costs.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, elaborated on the importance of this venture, stating, “Indian module makers, including us, have built their businesses around imported cells. Gangaikondan ends that for Vikram Solar. Cells are where the value, the technology, and the risk in a module sit, and in December we start making them here. It is the most important step in our integration journey, and not the last: our roadmap runs from wafer to module, on Indian soil.”
About Vikram Solar Limited: Established as a key player in photovoltaics, Vikram Solar Limited has made its mark internationally and holds a strong manufacturing footprint in India. The company is recognised for its efficient photovoltaic module manufacturing across 39 countries, and maintains a vast distribution network within India.
