Vikram Solar Limited has said that its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility at SIPCOT Industrial Park, Gangaikondan, in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district, is on schedule to produce its first cells in December 2026. The full capacity will then be commissioned in phases.
The update was shared in a press release filed with BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015.
According to the company, India has built large module capacity quickly, but most Indian modules still use imported cells. The company said cells make up the largest part of a module’s bill of materials and largely determine its efficiency, reliability and cost.
Vikram Solar said that at full capacity, the Gangaikondan plant will supply high-efficiency TOPCon cells for most of its module production. It said this would allow fully Indian-made modules for utility-scale, rooftop, PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM programmes where domestic content rules apply. The modules would also serve global customers who are diversifying their supply chains. The company said it intends to seek enlistment under List-II of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for cells made at the site in due course.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director, Vikram Solar, said Indian module makers, including his company, had built their businesses around imported cells, and that Gangaikondan would end that reliance for Vikram Solar. “Cells are where the value, the technology and the risk in a module sit,” he said. He described the plant as the most important step in the company’s integration journey, and said its roadmap runs from wafer to module within India.
The cell plant is the second of three phases in the company’s integration plan at Gangaikondan. The first phase, a 6 GW module plant, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in August 2026. The third phase is a 9 GW ingot and wafer facility, which has board approval and is targeted for FY29. The company said cell capacity is planned to rise to 12 GW.
According to Vikram Solar, Gangaikondan will be one of the few sites in India to make ingots, wafers, cells and modules together once complete. It said the campus will provide more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs.
The facility is being developed by the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, VSL Green Power Private Limited, on a campus of nearly 200 acres. The company said having all the stages at one site shortens supply cycles, improves quality control and reduces logistics costs.
Headquartered in Kolkata, Vikram Solar has a presence in 39 countries and a network of 119 authorised distributors and more than 750 dealers.
