In this week’s Mexican energy news, CENAGAS outlined operational measures and underground storage plans to address the nation’s natural gas supply risks. Meanwhile, SENER and CFE’s massive solar PV buildout plan faces grid integration, transmission, and evening peak demand challenges, driving demand for battery storage. Additionally, grid reliability remains a primary operational risk across northern industrial hubs, prompting infrastructure upgrades.
Powering forward. This week in Energy!
Mexico Seeks Natural Gas Storage to Reduce Supply Risks
To mitigate supply interruption risks from imported fuel, CENAGAS Director General Cuitláhuac García emphasized that coordinated operational measures between CENAGAS, PEMEX, CFE, and CENACE can maintain coverage for up to three days. However, long-term security requires dedicated underground storage. CENAGAS identified depleted hydrocarbon fields—such as the JAF field in southern Mexico (10Bcf) and the Brasil field in Tamaulipas (31Bcf)—as potential underground natural gas storage sites to work toward national reserve goals.
Solar Expansion and Managing the Evening Peak Demand
The ambitious solar buildout promoted by SENER and CFE for the 2026–2029 window will bring thousands of megawatts of new clean capacity into the National Electric System (SEN). However, industry experts caution that without synchronized transmission expansion and utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), key regional grids will face “duck curve” challenges—where excessive mid-day solar power shifts into steep evening demand ramps as solar generation ramps down.
Grid Reliability Risks Impact Northern Industrial Hubs
As nearshoring demand stresses local distribution networks, industrial tenants in major manufacturing hubs such as Monterrey are prioritizing power reliability in lease contracts. In response to power disruption concerns, CFE is advancing targeted transmission and distribution investment plans aimed at constructing new substations and upgrading high-voltage grid corridors.
