Thailand’s cabinet on Tuesday approved a 50-billion-baht (US$1.48-billion) rooftop solar programme, a finance ministry official said, part of the government’s energy transition policy.
The government will help one million households install rooftop solar panels within a year to shield Thai people from soaring energy prices driven by the Middle East war, Energy Minister Akanat Promphan said last month.
The government would provide direct financial support of 50,000 baht per household. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), both under the Ministry of Interior, would serve as one-stop-service centres assisting with the registration process.
The initiative seeks to encourage people to transition to solar energy, reduce energy costs and enable individual households to become electricity producers. They could sell any surplus power back to the national grid, generating additional income.
The cabinet approved the investment of more than 20 billion baht in smart grid development, allowing the public to sell surplus solar power to the government, Lavaron Sangsnit, the Finance Ministry’s permanent secretary said.
The cabinet also approved a cut ‌in biofuel taxes, which would help farmers, Mr Lavaron said.
The government is weighing cuts to fuel excise taxes on biofuels, specifically gasohol E20 and biodiesel B20, to lower domestic living costs, reduce reliance on imported energy and support the agricultural sector.
