Elgin to invest £400 million in 230MW solar-plus-storage projects in the UK – Solar Power Portal

The projects are in Suffolk, Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire and will expand Elgin’s portfolio of solar and energy storage assets.

UK renewable energy company Elgin has announced plans to invest nearly £400 million across five renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 230MW, with final investment decisions (FIDs) expected by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Four of the projects are expected to reach FID by the end of 2026, bringing them closer to construction and eventual connection to the UK electricity grid.
The planned investment represents approximately 0.5% of the UK government’s target of 45GW to 47GW of installed solar capacity by 2030, as set out in its Clean Power Action Plan.
The announcement comes ahead of the UK Budget, amid efforts to attract private investment into energy infrastructure and strengthen domestic energy security.
Dermot Kelleher, CEO of Elgin, said, “The UK remains one of Elgin’s most important markets and this investment reflects our confidence in its long-term future. These five projects represent a major commitment and will help turn the country’s renewable energy ambitions into reality.

“Ahead of the Budget, the priority for our industry is a stable operating environment that gives investors’ confidence to commit capital for the long term. Renewable energy is considerably cheaper than the alternatives and with improvements to grid access and planning processes, can be delivered more quickly – supporting economic growth, strengthening energy security and delivering more homegrown power. Investment on this scale will also support skilled work during construction and create longer-term opportunities in the operation and maintenance of renewable energy infrastructure.”
Elgin clarified that the nearly £400 million figure represents total investment commitments across the development, construction and 40-year operational life of the five projects. Capital expenditure across the combined 230MW capacity is estimated at approximately £175 million.
The investment builds on Elgin’s UK development pipeline of more than 10GW of solar and battery energy storage projects.
The independent power producer (IPP) was founded in 2009 and has a development pipeline exceeding 10GW. Elgin has delivered more than 1GW of ready-to-build projects, with over 300MW under construction across the UK and Ireland. The company is backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), which acquired a majority stake in the company in 2024.
Recently, the IPP acquired the 40MWp Kilderry Solar project in Ireland from BayWa r.e. The project, which received planning consent in October 2024, was awaiting construction. Additionally, Elgin also acquired a 200MW solar PV project in Ireland, with plans to invest approximately €200 million (£171.5 million) in its development and construction.
