RWE and BVB commission stadium battery – reNEWS

RWE and Borussia Dortmund have commissioned a 3.7MW battery storage system at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, completing their joint energy concept for the stadium.
The system was officially commissioned during BVB’s Bundesliga home match against Eintracht Frankfurt on 26 October, RWE said.
The company added that the battery can deliver its full 3.7MW output for just over an hour, allowing electricity generated by the stadium’s photovoltaic system to be used when the sun is not shining.
The solar installation, commissioned in December 2025, comprises 11,132 modules with a capacity of more than 5MWp.
The photovoltaic system can meet up to 45% of SIGNAL IDUNA PARK’s electricity requirements.
The project follows the installation of solar panels on the roof of the BVB FanWelt and the completion of what the partners describe as the world’s most powerful photovoltaic system on a stadium roof.
RWE chief executive Dr Markus Krebber said: “With the commissioning of the battery storage system, the entire system comprising the photovoltaic plant and the battery at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is now fully operational.
“Linking the two systems makes it possible to use the solar power generated on site even more flexibly, even when the sun isn’t shining.”
Borussia Dortmund executive board chairman Carsten Cramer said: “SIGNAL IDUNA PARK is not only our iconic home, but also a central element of our holistic decarbonisation strategy.
“With the battery storage system, we are collaborating with RWE to complete a forward-looking energy concept that makes our solar power even more usable.”
RWE will continue supporting BVB in optimising the stadium’s energy management under the companies’ six-year partnership.
The collaboration, which forms part of the BVB Empowers initiative, aims to further improve security of supply, energy efficiency and decarbonisation at the stadium.
