EDP will build Singapore's first overhead solar system – Idéal Investisseur

In a press release published on October 27, 2026, EDP announced that it would design, build, operate and test a photovoltaic installation with a capacity of up to 455 kWc on an industrial site belonging to JTC Corporation, a statutory board under the Singapore Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry. The project is presented by both partners as the country’s first overhead solar system.
The panels will be installed on a structure stretched between multi-level industrial buildings, which should transform approximately 4,300 m² of previously unused space into an electricity generation surface. Once operational, during the first half of 2028, the installation will feed its production into the Singaporean national grid for a period of 10 years.

The press release places this project within Singapore’s objective to achieve 3 GWc of installed solar capacity by 2030. This type of installation is presented as a complement to conventional installations on rooftops, vacant land and water surfaces, in a country where available surface area is limited.

“The next phase of growth requires looking beyond conventional spaces and finding new ways to integrate solar into the urban environment,” said Vera Pinto Pereira, member of EDP’s executive board, according to whom this pilot demonstrates how underutilized spaces can become productive clean energy assets.
The pilot must validate the engineering approach adopted and address technical difficulties related to integrating a solar infrastructure between existing buildings. The lessons learned will help determine whether similar systems can be replicated on other industrial sites without requiring additional land.

“Every surface is a potential source of energy, including the spaces between our buildings,” said Finn Tay, director of sustainable development at JTC, adding that these lessons will guide the deployment of such solutions on a larger scale in the establishment’s industrial zones.

Singapore is EDP’s first market in distributed solar in the Asia-Pacific region and hosts its regional operations center. The project extends a partnership engaged with JTC: in 2020, EDP won the SolarLand Phase 3 program, of which 51.2 MWc are already in service.
