First Solar is inaugurating the first phase of a new manufacturing facility in Gaffney, South Carolina, on October 28, 2026, according to Solar Power World. The $330 million plant onshores final production steps for the company’s Series 6 Plus modules.
The Gaffney site currently employs roughly 500 people, and First Solar anticipates that figure reaching 700 by mid-2027, once the facility’s second phase is finished.
The South Carolina plant adds to First Solar’s three fully vertically integrated manufacturing sites in Ohio and one each in Alabama and Louisiana, alongside research and development centers in Ohio and California. The company will hold 3.7 GW of annual manufacturing capacity in South Carolina, lifting its total U.S. manufacturing capacity to 17.7 GW per year.
The Series 6 Plus module uses First Solar’s thin-film cadmium-telluride base to deliver 480 W at 19 percent efficiency. It carries aluminum under-mount frames and dual junction boxes. First Solar is developing a bifacial version of the panel that would absorb light on both sides.
