Waverly Twp. officials will hear requests for solar panels on two properties Wednesday.
Ann Pelicci is seeking a special exception to install a nearly 4,000-square-foot ground-mounted solar panel system on her property on Lynnwood Road, according to a legal notice published in The Times-Tribune.
The Jewish Discovery Center, which filed its application under the name Chabad of the Abingtons, is looking for a special exception to install a ground-mounted solar panel system that is 3,000 square feet on its property at 216 Miller Road.
Both would exceed the maximum length of 750 feet permitted in the township for a ground-mounted solar panel system.
Rabbi Benny Rapoport said the panels will be used to power the home and synagogue on the property. He hopes it will offset their electric costs and cover their electric bills, which cost around $2,000 a month.
“We want to offset the carbon footprint and try to generate the same amount of usage to be able to cover that,” Rapoport said.
If approved, the panels will be built on the 20-acre property in an open field behind the synagogue, the same area where they plan to put in a dozen cabins. He said the trees and forests surrounding the property ensure the array will be hidden from neighboring properties, while still getting lots of sunlight.
He believes everyone should have solar panels to offset carbon emissions.
“We have to move towards a more sustainable, renewable source through wind and solar,” Rapoport said. “Solar is really inexpensive, and I think that’s sort of our duty in a sense. Everyone, everyone should be doing this.”
Efforts to reach Pelicci were unsuccessful.
The township’s zoning hearing board will hear Pelicci’s request at 5:30 p.m. and the Jewish Discovery Center’s plans at 6:30. The hearings will be held in the Waverly Community House.
