Botswana’s state-owned Water Utilities Corporation has launched a tender for floating photovoltaic systems to be built at dams owned by the water and wastewater utility, according to pv magazine. The process opens with an expression of interest phase, through which eligible and qualified companies, joint ventures and consortia are invited to submit bids.
Winning bidders would take on the design, development and operation of the floating solar plants. Full tender documentation is available for download on the utility’s website, and expressions of interest must be delivered by post by November 19.
The utility previously tendered a feasibility study for floating solar on its dams in 2024. At that stage it organized site visits to the Gaborone and Bokaa dams, the Lotsane dam, and the Letsibogo and Dikgatlhong dams, all in the eastern part of the country. The Dikgatlhong and Gaborone dams are the two largest in Botswana.
According to figures in the project database of the Africa Solar Industry Association, 190.5 MW of solar capacity is operational in Botswana. Earlier this year a groundbreaking ceremony was held for a 500 MW solar project, the largest of its kind under development in the country, which is to be paired with 500 MWh of battery energy storage.
