A Northwest Indiana builder is using solar power to support a kitten rescue, with plans to turn the project into something larger: modular homes and animal rescue spaces for veterans.
Funded mostly through the builder’s disability check, the do-it-yourself system supplies electricity to the rescue and an RV.
As a Reddit post detailed, the setup includes a 5-kilowatt EcoWorthy off-grid inverter and the manufacturer’s Cubix 100 battery. Feeding the inverter are six 450-watt Seraphim bifacial panels.
The RV relies on the system for all its electricity. A mini-split unit and smaller electronics also draw power from it inside the boxcar rescue.
“I’m creating a prototype modular home and animal rescue to provide to veterans for a non-profit I’m building,” the original poster explained.
For homeowners considering their own setup, going solar is one of the best ways to save money on home energy, and solar leases can potentially deliver hundreds of dollars in monthly savings without upfront costs. EasyHome‘s free explorer tool lets you check potential savings from vetted installers in your area.
The local utility had been less consistent than the independent system, the OP said, with storms affecting energy reliability in their Northwest Indiana location.
But battery charging didn’t depend on solar alone. They added that a small propane generator provided top-ups to help keep the off-grid setup running.
With energy prices through the roof, there’s never been a better time to go solar — and EasyHome can help you find the best prices from the best installers in your area.
EasyHome takes the guesswork and headaches out of energy upgrades by showing you estimated savings from a network of vetted local partners. To get started, just enter your ZIP and share a few details about your home — seeing your estimate is really that easy.
“I definitely need a few more batteries, but most of this is coming out of my disability check so I need to save up,” they noted.
Ground-mounted supports in front of the containers were expected to host four additional panels the builder has ready to install. Once all 10 of the 450-watt panels are in place, the array’s combined rated capacity would increase from 2.7 kilowatts to 4.5 kilowatts.
For homeowners weighing similar equipment, EasyHome‘s free explorer tool can help compare solar possibilities and explore options for backup battery storage. Pairing solar with a battery allows homeowners to maximize savings and power their home with solar energy when the grid goes down, provided the system is configured for backup operation.
One user was impressed: “Great job! We have talked extensively about getting shipping containers to act as portable power sources for disaster areas, looks great”
Other DIY solar projects have achieved impressive results, even on modest budgets.
• In Wisconsin, a wheelchair user learned a 400-watt solar setup might cover daily charging.
• A workshop owner avoided trenching costs by building a $2,200 solar system for tools.
• In Tennessee, a homeowner hoped a $1,400 Anker solar kit could reduce electricity bills.
• A homeowner rejected a $30,000 solar contract, building a battery-first system for just over $8,000.
