The spacewalk lasted seven hours and 11 minutes.
NASA has released extraordinary footage of the 100th US spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS), during which two astronauts installed a massive new solar array to boost the orbiting laboratory’s power capacity.
Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Joshua Kutryk and NASA astronaut Anil Menon spent seven hours and 11 minutes outside the station on October 29. The mission marked the 100th US spacewalk conducted from the ISS without a space shuttle docked to the station.
The two astronauts reportedly installed and deployed a 750-lb roll-out solar array on the station’s port-side truss structure, about 260 miles above Earth. “The array is the seventh IROSA installed on the station and will provide additional power to support critical operations, including a safe and controlled deorbit,” NASA said.
The new solar array is part of a larger effort to boost the station’s power. All eight arrays could raise its power by up to 30 percent, from 160 to approximately 215 kilowatts (kW).
