Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ambitious goal to add another 500 GW of new non-fossil capacity over the next 10 to 11 years, highlighting the country’s progress in renewable energy deployment, domestic manufacturing and grid infrastructure.
Speaking at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Modi said India fulfilled its Paris pledge of sourcing half its installed power capacity from non-fossil sources in 2025, five years ahead of schedule. India now ranks among the top three nations in solar and renewable energy with over 50% non-fossil installed capacity and nearly 300 GW already achieved toward the 500 GW target, said the Prime Minister.
Modi highlighted that India’s solar module manufacturing capacity has grown from around 2 GW a decade ago to over 200 GW today alongside nearly 40 GW of solar cell capacity. He attributed the expansion to domestic investment and manufacturing initiatives, including the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant] programs.
Highlighting the rapid progress of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana launched in February 2024 to install rooftop solar panels in one crore homes, the Prime Minister noted that over 65 lakh households have joined the movement within 24 to 25 months at a pace of one lakh new homes every six days. This has helped cut electricity bills by roughly 76 percent and reducing bills to zero for lakhs of families who now earn money by selling surplus power to the grid, he said.
The prime minister said that PM-KUSUM scheme has supported solar-powered irrigation for more than 30 lakh farmers. For expanding solar power in agriculture, he urged moving beyond the distribution of lakhs of solar pumps to utilizing uncultivated farm spaces.
He also urged startups and research institutions to develop new solar applications, including rooftop solar cooking systems and solar-powered charging solutions for electric vehicles.
Modi said India is advancing towards its target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. He also highlighted the development of Green Energy Corridors comprising dedicated transmission lines and substations supported by the One Nation, One Power Grid network that unified five regional grids onto a single frequency. He added that the country is now advancing to the next phase to further strengthen this transmission infrastructure. “Recently, India has set a target of an investment of about INR 2 lakh crore rupees for this,” observed PM Modi.
The Prime Minister noted that the renewable energy sector has attracted over INR 15 lakh crore, or $164 billion, over the past decade, including over INR 6 lakh crore in just two years since the 2024 RE-INVEST Summit. He said that investment opportunities in the sector could exceed INR 20 lakh crore by the end of the decade.
