Acciona Energía to add 42 MWh of battery storage across Dominican solar farms – ESS News

Acciona Energía has announced plans to build three co-located battery energy storage systems totaling 21.2 MW / 41.7 MWh across its operational solar portfolio in the Dominican Republic, targeting commercial operation in late 2027.
Spanish renewables developer Acciona Energía will install 21.2 MW / 41.7 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across three of its operational solar photovoltaic assets in the Dominican Republic.
The installations will be co-located at the Pedro Corto (82.7 MWp), Calabaza I (58 MWp), and Cotoperí Solar (162.6 MWp) plants, which together represent 303.3 MWp of installed solar capacity. The developer plans to commission all three sites in the final quarter of 2027.
By co-locating the systems, the developer aims to cut capital expenditure through shared balance-of-plant infrastructure, avoiding additional land acquisition and utilizing established substation and grid connection points.
The investment follows recent regulatory shifts within the Dominican Republic’s National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI), as grid operators contend with reduced system inertia and rising curtailment, with battery storage mandates and ancillary service market structures.
Acciona generally operates its assets alongside local investment partners, holding 51% stakes, with pension and regional impact capital showing that institutional investors in the region view storage as an investable, bankable asset class.
Acciona has not yet disclosed EPCs, BESS OEMs, or system integration partners.
