Spanish utility Endesa has started construction of three battery energy storage systems (BESS) to hybridize existing solar farms in Extremadura and Andalusia. The projects, located at Ardila in Fregenal de la Sierra, Badajoz, and La Vega I and II in Teba, Málaga, will have a combined power capacity of 60.16 MW and storage capacity of 120.34 MWh, with a total investment of €25.2 million ($28.37 million).
The three systems will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and grid-forming technology, which is designed to respond rapidly to changes in grid conditions and help maintain network stability.
The projects were selected under funding calls for innovative storage systems hybridized with renewable generation. They are being developed under Endesa’s partnership with Masdar, which acquired a 49% stake in a portfolio of the utility’s solar assets in 2024. The partnership includes plans to add battery storage to existing solar facilities.
Developed by Furatena Solar 1, the Ardila project will hybridize Endesa’s existing 44 MWp solar farm in Fregenal de la Sierra. The battery system will have 36.10 MW of power capacity and 72.20 MWh of storage, distributed across 12 containers, each with 6.02 MWh.
The installation will combine LFP batteries with grid-forming inverters.
The project represents an investment of €14.3 million, including €4.6 million in public funding from the first call for innovative storage projects hybridized with renewable energy installations under Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The La Vega I and La Vega II projects, developed by Enel Green Power España Solar 1 and Baylio Solar, respectively, will hybridize two existing solar farms in Teba, Málaga.
Each system will have 12.03 MW of power capacity and 24.07 MWh of storage, using four battery containers rated at 6.017 MWh each and four inverters. Together, the projects will provide 24.06 MW/48.14 MWh of storage.
Like Ardila, both projects will use LFP batteries and grid-forming technology. They have received public funding through the first call for innovative storage projects hybridized with renewable energy, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for 2021-2027 and administered by Spain’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE).
The two projects represent a combined investment of €10.9 million, including €4.4 million in public funding. Construction began in October 2026, with both systems scheduled to enter operation by the end of 2027.
CIRCE and the Institute for Technological Research at Comillas Pontifical University will participate in research and technology validation, including on-site testing and studies of equipment performance in grid-forming mode.
The three projects are Endesa’s first lithium battery systems designed to hybridize solar farms in mainland Spain.
