Redditch Morrisons plans major rooftop solar panel installation – The Redditch Standard

5th Nov, 2026
The application, received and validated on Friday, October 30, seeks prior approval for the installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system on the supermarket building.
Solar PV panels convert sunlight into electricity, allowing businesses to generate renewable power on site and potentially reduce the amount of electricity they need to purchase from the national grid.
The proposed installation has a rated capacity of 262.14kW, although the amount of electricity actually generated would depend on factors including sunlight, weather conditions and the performance of the equipment.
If installed, the system could help the supermarket reduce its reliance on externally supplied electricity and lower emissions associated with its energy consumption.
The plans form part of a growing trend towards using large commercial rooftops for renewable energy generation, with supermarkets and industrial buildings particularly suited to such installations because of their extensive roof space.
The application has been submitted under the prior approval process, which allows certain types of development to be considered under permitted development rules, subject to relevant conditions and requirements.
According to publicly available planning records, the proposal remains under consideration and no decision has yet been recorded.
The application does not specify a confirmed installation date, the total cost of the proposed works or the amount of electricity the panels are expected to generate annually.
It is also not yet known what proportion of the supermarket’s electricity requirements could be met by the proposed system.
The application can be viewed through the council’s planning portal using reference 26/01272/PRIOR.
The Redditch Standard is one of a group of local weekly newspapers spanning Worcestershire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands published by Bullivant Media Group – each newspaper providing all the latest local news, sport and advertising, in print and 247 on line.
