Samsung C&T acquires WA engineering firm Powertech in $100 million BESS play – pv magazine Australia

Samsung C&T has acquired a majority stake in Australian electrical engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor Powertech in a deal valued at about $100 million (USD 70 million). The transaction surfaced via the Australian Financial Review’s Street Talk column, the quasi-clearinghouse for Australian corporate dealmaking that often runs ahead of formal market disclosures.
Citing sales documentation from advisor PwC, the report notes Powertech is forecast to generate $115 million in FY26 revenue and $8.9 million in EBITDA, valuing the buyout at roughly 11.2x EBITDA. Management will retain a minority stake.
Operating across Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Singapore, Powertech employs 300 engineers and technicians. The firm provides full power and electrical EPC turnkey solutions across utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), switchyards, microgrids, and standalone power systems. Powertech offers everything from feasibility studies, design, construction, commissioning and start-up, and operations and maintenance. It also supplies some end-to-end EPC services for smaller scale projects.
The acquisition comes as Samsung C&T expands its ‘full-wrap’ EPC offering in the Australian market. In mid-2025 it won a full-wrap EPC contract to deliver Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) Australia’s 250 MW / 500 MWh Gnarwarre battery project in Victoria.
Samsung C&T described the project as a milestone moment for the company’s growing presence in the Australian energy market, adding it “showcases our global capabilities in delivering complex, grid-critical energy infrastructure.”
The local developer arm of Samsung, Samsung C&T Renewable Energy Australia, is advancing a multi-gigawatt pipeline of renewable energy generation and storage projects across New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria, led by the 200 MW/800 MWh Darnum and the 100 MW / 400 MWh Mangoplah BESS. It also received approval for the South Coree project, a 80 MW / 320 MWh BESS, last month.
