Tokyo tests solar-powered hydrogen production at high-rise office complex – pv magazine Global

Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate, Sumitomo Life Insurance and Obayashi Corp. are implementing a green hydrogen production and power generation project at Shinagawa Intercity, a high-rise office and commercial complex in Tokyo’s Minato ward.
The project is the first to receive funding under the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s support program for the practical implementation of green hydrogen production.
The system uses electricity generated by rooftop solar panels to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. The hydrogen is stored using a hydrogen-absorbing alloy and subsequently converted into electricity by fuel cells when needed. The electricity will be used to power lighting in selected common areas of the complex.
An energy management system (EMS) will coordinate the operation of the PV array, battery storage, hydrogen production equipment, hydrogen storage units and fuel cells. The integrated system is designed to address the mismatch between solar electricity generation and building demand.
The companies have not disclosed the installed PV capacity, electrolyzer capacity, hydrogen storage volume or fuel cell power output.
Separately, the companies have introduced an off-site physical corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply Shinagawa Intercity with solar electricity from external generation facilities.
The agreement is expected to supply approximately 3 GWh of renewable electricity annually through the existing grid, with an estimated reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 1,200 metric tons per year.
The Shinagawa Intercity complex includes offices, retail facilities and a multipurpose hall. It occupies a site of approximately 34,388 square meters and has a total floor area of around 337,126 square meters.
Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate is a Japanese property developer and real estate management company specializing in office buildings, residential properties and mixed-use developments. Sumitomo Life Insurance is one of Japan’s major life insurance providers, with additional investments in real estate and other assets. Obayashi Corp. is a Japanese construction and engineering group active in building construction, civil engineering, infrastructure development and renewable energy projects.
