Watch: Melita Transforms Former Malta Quarry Into €2.56 Million Solar Farm – Lovin Malta

By

A former quarry in Imqabba has been given a new lease of life, thanks to a €2.56 million solar farm developed by Melita that can generate enough electricity to meet the consumption of approximately 900 households.
The project, which was fully financed through private investment, is part of Melita’s ongoing efforts to increase its renewable energy generation and reduce its reliance on conventional energy sources.
Unlike solar installations that power individual buildings, the Imqabba solar farm exports all the electricity it generates directly to Malta’s national grid.

The project also benefited from the Regulator for Energy and Water Services’ (REWS) Invitation to Bid scheme, which offers renewable energy projects a favourable rate for the electricity they feed into the grid.
Environment and Energy Minister Miriam Dalli recently visited the site, accompanied by Melita CEO Harald Roesch and Head of Customer Operations and AI Implementation Kevin Borg.
During the visit, Dalli encouraged more businesses to follow Melita’s example and invest in renewable energy projects.
“These are the types of projects that we encourage as a country. We want to continue encouraging companies like Melita to increase their use of clean energy sources,” she said.
“Projects such as this demonstrate how investment in clean energy can deliver tangible results. This is the way forward, and I encourage more companies to follow suit.”
And Melita isn’t stopping there!
The Imqabba installation complements two smaller solar farms already operated by the company, bringing it closer to its long-term renewable energy ambitions.
Melita currently generates renewable energy equivalent to more than 40% of its annual electricity consumption.
However, the company has its sights set even higher, with further projects in the pipeline aimed at eventually generating enough renewable energy to match 100% of its electricity needs.
The transformation of a former quarry into a solar energy facility also highlights how previously used industrial sites can be repurposed to support Malta’s transition towards cleaner energy.
