The world’s largest solar farm complex, located in Qinghai, China, produces nearly 17.000 megawatts of energy and, according to a study in Nature, improves local biodiversity and generates jobs, supporting the market of 11 million electric vehicles.
The world’s largest cluster of solar farms is located in Qinghai, China. The structure sits atop the remote Tibetan Plateau and significantly surpasses the largest solar farm in the United States.
The Chinese government hopes that projects like this will propel the country toward a renewable future. The Qinghai cluster could produce nearly 17.000 megawatts of energy, according to data reported by the New York Times.
Technology in 2025 ceases to be a promise and definitively changes the world, transforming work, education, health, and people’s daily lives.
It’s not 50 or 100 km/h: studies reveal the ideal speed for saving fuel on the road.
Measuring nearly 6 meters in length, capable of raising its body to the height of an adult, and possessing one of the largest venom loads ever recorded, the king cobra is the largest venomous snake in history.
NASA observes exoplanet with rare atmosphere, soot clouds, and signs of diamonds in a system that defies planet formation.
A study published in the journal Nature claims that kilometers of solar panels change the desert environment. The presence of the infrastructure helps improve the biodiversity of the surrounding area by analyzing nutrients and air humidity.
Researchers found that the solar farm helped increase moisture levels in the soil. This affected the soil structure, allowing a greater variety of microbes and plants to thrive in the region.
Improved soil conditions have allowed for more life within the farm than in the neighboring desert. The panels absorb solar radiation, which leads to less water loss in the soil below.
Reduced evaporation due to shade is a key factor in increasing soil moisture. Regular washing of the panels has also been noted as a potential reason for this higher water content.
In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions with clean electricity, the project helps the environment. The study observed unexpected benefits for the local nature resulting from the massive installation of the panels.
The solar farm required local workers to operate the immense renewable energy structure. This helped to boost empregos in an area where there were few job opportunities for the resident population.
China has an advantage in creating giant solar farms because it dominates the supply of solar cells. The country has a huge domestic demand for electricity, and is the largest market for EVs by a significant margin.
According to the IEA, 17 million electric vehicles were sold worldwide in 2024. More than 11 million of these units were sold in China, representing a massive share of the current global automotive market.
Approximately 10% of all cars on China’s roads are currently electric. To power them, the country will need to continue developing massive projects like the solar power cluster located in Qinghai.
