BEEAH and Masdar have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to identify and develop utility-scale clean energy projects in Sharjah, reinforcing efforts to expand renewable power capacity in the emirate.
The agreement was signed by senior executives from both companies at the World Future Energy Summit, held as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
Under the agreement, the two parties will establish a framework to assess and advance viable solar photovoltaic (PV) projects, covering the full project lifecycle—from initial screening and feasibility studies to construction, operation, and maintenance.
Areas of collaboration include grid impact analysis, solar resource assessments, and site evaluations. The framework also enables the exploration of additional clean energy solutions, including hybrid battery energy storage systems designed to enhance grid resilience.
The partnership builds on previous cooperation between BEEAH and Masdar, including the joint development of the Middle East’s first commercial-scale waste-to-energy plant in Sharjah. That collaboration was formalized in 2017 through the establishment of the Emirates Waste to Energy Company, marking a milestone in the region’s transition to alternative energy sources.
The new agreement aligns with BEEAH’s Net Zero by 2040 commitment and its broader clean energy strategy, which extends beyond waste-to-energy projects. Initiatives include on-site solar generation at its LEED Platinum–certified headquarters, as well as studies to repurpose closed landfills for solar power generation and utilize landfill gas for electricity production.
The JDA also supports national energy objectives, as the United Arab Emirates seeks to triple its renewable energy capacity by 2030 under the Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.
