China has significantly increased its coal power capacity, reviving concerns about its climate-changing carbon emissions. A joint report by two research groups shows that more than 50 large coal units, or boilers combined with turbines, were commissioned in 2025, a sharp rise from previous years. Despite this, China also added substantial wind and solar capacity, slightly reducing its reliance on coal. The government cites energy security and economic growth as reasons for the coal expansion. However, experts warn this could delay the country’s transition to cleaner energy. The report urges China to retire inefficient coal plants and limit emissions in its next five-year plan.
On Wednesday, the Indiana House passed House Bill 1343, which allows the Indiana National Guard’s adjutant general to establish a “military police force” of members who can make arrests, conduct searches and seizures, carry firearms and exercise other police powers throughout the state.
