High above the field of play for this year’s big game sits a fully functional green roof covering roughly 27,000 square feet, crafted by American Hydrotech, a Sika company. The designers purposely placed this area on the west side of the suite tower rather than using a traditional, closed roof. The action on the field and the crowd won’t be the only energy producers at Levi’s Stadium. NRG Energy partnered with the 49ers to install solar panels that serve as a roof for the suite tower and pedestrian bridges. In all, there are nearly 1,200 photovoltaic panels installed on the rooftop.
As the world turns its eyes toward Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX this Sunday, February 8, 2026, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the venue that set the standard for green sports architecture. In a recent feature, Roofing Contractor highlighted “5 Things about Levi’s Stadium Before Super Bowl LX,” and for those of us in the living architecture community, the stadium’s commitment to sustainability remains its most winning play.
When it opened in 2014, Levi’s Stadium was the first professional football stadium in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold certification as new construction. While much of the buzz this week surrounds the $200 million in recent renovations—including those massive 16,000-square-foot 4K video boards—it’s the 27,000-square-foot green roof atop the suite tower that continues to be its distinguishing “eco-icon.”
The Faithful Farm: In 2016, 6,500 square feet of the green roof was converted into the NFL’s first rooftop farm. It currently produces over 40 rotational crops—from peppers to leafy greens—used in the stadium’s farm-to-table concessions.
Energy Synergy: The roof features the NRG Solar Terrace, integrating 1,162 solar panels. We’ve often discussed the synergy between green roofs and PV; the plants help cool the panels, increasing their efficiency in the California sun.
Native Biodiversity: The living roof is home to 16 species of vegetation native to the Bay Area, proving that sports mega-projects can still provide critical urban habitat and mitigate the heat island effect.
Water Wise: Combined with a sophisticated recycled water system (which handles 85% of the stadium’s water needs), the green roof plays a vital role in stormwater management for the site.
As fans watch the Seattle Seahawks take on the New England Patriots, they’ll be sitting in a venue that proves high-tech entertainment and ecological responsibility aren’t mutually exclusive.
