Global steel producer ArcelorMittal continues to implement projects to improve energy efficiency and use renewable energy sources. The company’s plant in Bytom, Poland, has completed the construction of a 1 MW solar power plant, implemented by Quanta Energy.
The installation consists of 1,692 photovoltaic modules and serves the needs of the plant, providing electricity to key infrastructure elements: sheet cutting lines, overhead cranes, and charging stations for forklifts. An important feature is the high level of self-sufficiency – in summer, up to 90% of the electricity generated will be used directly at the plant.

The installation of this solar farm is a step towards decarbonising our operations,» emphasised Rafal Nawrat, Director of ArcelorMittal SSC Poland.
Quanta Energy also noted that the result is important for the industry: a stable and predictable on-site power source, lower operating costs, and greater resilience to energy price fluctuations.
The steel elements for the structure were manufactured directly on the company’s production line and used for installation, which was carried out by Hetmaniok. The project uses Magnelis corrosion-resistant steel, which ensures the durability of the structure in an industrial environment.
The company notes that its own power source ensures stability of supply, reduces operating costs, and increases resistance to fluctuations in electricity prices.
ArcelorMittal recently announced a large-scale investment in Krakow, Poland, which includes the construction of a new boiler house, the installation of a closed-loop heat recovery system, and the construction of a power substation. Once the project is complete, the company’s Krakow division will reduce its natural gas consumption and cut CO2 emissions by 115,000 tons per year.
