Dunn County residents share thoughts on massive solar project – WEAU

SPRING BROOK, Wis. (WEAU) – The public comment period for a proposed nearly 2,000-acre solar energy facility in Dunn County has closed, and the fate of the project now rests with state regulators in Madison.
Muddy Creek Solar LLC is seeking approval to construct a 322-megawatt solar farm in the town of Spring Brook. The facility would span 128 parcels of land owned by 28 local families. As of Feb. 23, all public comments submitted by area residents have become part of a permanent legal record.
The project has drawn support from some landowners and concern from others. One fifth-generation farmer said the arrangement offers a path forward for smaller operations.
“I’m a fifth generation living here… this is just a great opportunity for our farm to diversify. We’re a smaller farm. And if we’re just too small of land, then I don’t think we can go 7, 8 generations if this doesn’t go,” the farmer said.
Other residents expressed concern about living adjacent to what would be more than 700,000 solar panels.
“It’d be on three sides of my property pretty much… if I wanted to sell my house, what is it going to be worth anything or can I even do it?” one concerned resident said.
The plan includes a five-acre battery storage system. The company has committed to reclaiming the land within 25 years, though some residents questioned whether that pledge would be honored.
“Are they going to hold true to that? A lot of companies don’t in 30 years,” the same resident said.
Some residents who remain undecided on the project said the regulatory process has been difficult to follow.
“The process could be a little bit more forth putting, a little more accessible, other than a lot of black and white pages in the mail. And sometimes that’s hard to decipher,” one resident said.
The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin said in a statement the commissioners are responsible for independently reviewing the application and the full record of evidence — and ultimately reaching a decision that complies with state law.
No date has been set for a final ruling. The Muddy Creek Solar project is planned to begin construction in 2027, pending PSC approval. All submitted comments and project updates are publicly available on the PSC website.
