JAKARTA – The policy of the United States government under President Donald Trump which raised import tariffs on Indonesian solar cells and panels to 104.38 percent is considered a heavy blow to the national renewable energy industry.
Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives and Chairman of the 15th MPR RI and Deputy Chairman of the Political, Defense and Security Coordinator of the Indonesian KADIN, Bambang Soesatyo, said that the surge in tariffs would immediately undermine the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the US market.
“Such a high tariff is clearly not a small number. With import duties above 100 percent, the price of Indonesian solar panels in the American market will automatically jump two times more expensive than before. That makes our competitiveness hit hard and has the potential to significantly cut export volumes,” said Bamsoet in Jakarta, Saturday (28/2/26).
Bamsoet explained that the policy was included in the determination of anti-subsidy import duties (countervailing duties) against Indonesia, India, and Laos. He highlighted the size of the US market. The total import of US solar panels throughout 2025 is said to reach around US$ 4.5 billion, with a large portion from Asian countries.
Indonesia, he said, is an exporter whose trend has increased in the last three years. The value of Indonesian photovoltaic product exports in 2024 even penetrated hundreds of millions of US dollars, with the US as one of the main destinations. However, the 104.38 percent tariff makes Indonesia’s position hit because the price of the product becomes much more expensive than the US domestic production or other countries that are not subject to similar policies.
Bamsoet encouraged the government to move quickly through trade diplomacy, both bilateral and multilateral. “If there are indications of violations of international trade rules, the option of bringing this case to the dispute mechanism at the WTO must also be seriously considered,” he said.
Outside the diplomatic and international legal channels, he asked for the acceleration of export market diversification so that dependence on one market would not continue to be a weak point. He mentioned the open opportunities in the European Union, the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, to Latin America. At the same time, the domestic market is asked to be strengthened through the acceleration of PLTS projects as well as realistic and adaptive TKDN policies.
“Strengthening the domestic industry is the key. Support for financing, fiscal incentives, improving the quality of human resources, and international standard product standardization must be strengthened so that the national solar panel industry remains strong even in the face of external pressures,” concluded Bamsoet.
