The Minooka Village Board last week approved the final plat for the Water Lily Solar Farm project.
Village Administrator Dan Duffy said the five megawatt solar farm will be constructed on nine acres of land near the northeast corner of Wilde Road and Ridge Road.
Trustee Barry Thompson was the only member to vote no on the project.
“Voted no because I’ve been a consistent no against this project the whole time too. First reason is I thought that would be a very good development area for Minooka for the future. Just north of town, on Ridge Road, probably some good opportunity for residential or commercial. and they came in with the county…and the state kind of precluding us being able to do anything on, solar fields. The county’s worked with us but the state is not. So they were able to come in and do this. So we worked with them. They worked with us. And, we had a little carve out for some property there along Ridge Road just on the north side of Wilde for what we thought maybe could be a commercial little development at some point. Well, because of how they end up having to do their interconnect with ComEd, you’ll see seven poles right across the face of that. So you’re not going to really have any useful property out of that, you know, the way it ended up turning out.”
Thompson continued with his thoughts.
“We had tried to push them to go with ComEd and go to a different direction for their connection. They said they couldn’t do it. They come to find later that other places could make work with ComEd to get things done, and that was one of our first ones too. So, you know, it just to me, it was unfortunate. I don’t think we were well prepared. As a municipal government, we tried to do everything we could correctly. We’ve learned a lot since then. So, unfortunately, I’ve been against it.”
Meanwhile, Duffy said they have been working with the company for the last two years and will be required to follow several conditions.
