Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, during his visit to the coastal city of Kochi, launched multiple high-impact projects aimed at accelerating the development of Kerala. A recent press release announced that he also laid the foundation stone for a 50 MW floating solar project in West Kallada. Modi remarked that through this project, the government intends to ensure that Kerala progresses further in the field of solar power generation.
Highlighting the state’s potential, Modi noted that Kerala’s large number of water bodies provides significant opportunities for floating solar power development. Emphasising the shift toward a greener future, he said, “It is our endeavor that Kerala moves further ahead in solar power generation.”
Kerala has numerous reservoirs, dams, lakes, and backwaters, making floating solar a practical option for expanding renewable energy without using additional land. Floating solar panels can also reduce water evaporation and improve panel efficiency due to the cooling effect of the water surface.
In a move to bolster India’s position as a global manufacturing and technology hub, the Prime Minister also linked the nation’s progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors to the rising demand for sustainable energy.
Kerala has already commissioned several floating solar projects, including the 101.6 MW Kayamkulam floating solar plant and the 92 MW NTPC Haripad floating solar project.
In 2022, India’s largest power producer, state-owned NTPC Limited, started commercial operations of the Kayamkulam floating solar PV project in Kerala. NTPC executed the 92 MW project with Tata Power Solar Systems serving as the EPC contractor.
Tata Power Solar Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power, also commissioned a 101.6 MWp floating solar power project in Kayamkulam, Kerala, installed on a 350-acre water body in the backwaters region.
The installation was completed within the stipulated timeline despite challenges such as variable water depths, high sea tides, and severe water salinity encountered during the construction phase.
