A solar panels plan has been revealed by a Nuneaton school as it bids to get greener. The Nuneaton Academy wants to install more than 1,000 panels on some roofs at the site on Radnor Drive.
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has received a planning application, which explains: "It is proposed to install around 1,031 solar photovoltaic panels on the flat and pitched roofs, with a total generation capacity of about 465kWp.
"The proposed installation will help the school in its ambition to maximise on the potential of on-site for zero-carbon solar electricity generation as part of its wider decarbonisation strategy."

The proposal explains that the panels will not be on all of the roof space at the site. "The majority of roofs have panels positioned towards the south in the direction of the endless empty fields. Where southward positioning of the proposed panels is not possible and the panels will be positioned towards the east and west as per the roof orientation and to maximise capacity on a flat roof, the question of seeing the proposed installation and how it may affect the amenity of the area would arise.
"To realise if there is possibility for impact from the proposed installation, it is very important to remember that only certain roofs have panels positioned towards the east and west: one pitched roof and one section of a flat roof. The flat roof where panels are positioned towards the east and west is the same height as the residential properties, if not taller, has parapet walls with the panels set one meter away from the parapet walls and low lying due to its 10 degree tilt.
"The other roof which is the pitched roof of the football academy is very curved and so the panels will be aligned according the existing curvature of the roof such that it is incident upwards and not towards a residential property or roadway
"The odds of seeing the proposed panels on any of the roofs is very low. In the off chance that the panels on the pitched roof is seen, the capacity that would be seen is similar to a permitted development installation under 50kWp termed as microgeneration or even a household solar installation following permitted development. Since it is similar to such installations and these installations are found very commonly nowadays, the proposed installation of panels if seen cannot be considered as detrimental towards the amenity of their living."
The plan is now being considered by planning officers at the Town Hall and all of the documents can be found on the council's website. Look in the planning applications section for reference 041598.
