According to pv magazine, Tongwei has formed a strategic cooperation with GS-Solar and Golden Solar to develop a manufacturing facility for hybrid heterojunction back-contact solar cells. The agreement was formalized on March 18, 2026, at Golden Solar’s headquarters in Quanzhou.
The partnership aims to collaborate across the technology value chain, encompassing development, manufacturing, and process optimization. The planned facility is intended for large-scale commercialization, though its specific location and capacity were not revealed.
Under the terms, Tongwei Solar will contribute manufacturing capacity, facilities, supply chain resources, and operational management. GS-Solar will provide the hybrid HBC cell technology, including large-scale integrated equipment and mass-production process solutions. Golden Solar will supply patents along with commissioning and process support.
The companies plan to establish a coordination mechanism to optimize production, lower costs, and improve cell efficiency as they advance toward industrial deployment. The core technology combines several solar cell concepts, integrating elements from heterojunction and TOPCon designs within a back-contact architecture that features a grid-free front side. This hybrid approach seeks to balance high efficiency with reduced production costs and simpler processing.
GS-Solar has reported increasing laboratory conversion efficiencies for this technology in recent years. The collaboration marks an entry for Tongwei, a major global solar cell manufacturer, into the hybrid HBC segment and could hasten the shift from lab development to industrial output. It also broadens Tongwei’s existing technology portfolio.
GS-Solar has engaged in similar partnerships previously, including agreements with other major solar manufacturers to upgrade existing production lines to HBC technology. These moves suggest GS-Solar is establishing itself as a supplier of technology and equipment for commercializing hybrid HBC cells.
