Chinese officials have recently held initial talks with providers of equipment to make solar panels as the country is considering export limits on advanced solar manufacturing equipment to the US. The proposed limits could affect Tesla factory expansion plans. Tesla has looked to purchase $2.9 billion of equipment from Chinese suppliers including Suzhou Maxwell Technologies. According to the Reuters, discussions have focused on high-end equipment needed for higher efficiency panels known as HJT technology. The company has set a goal of reaching 100 GWs of solar manufacturing capacity on American soil before 2028. No rule has been finalised and the talks have not advanced to formal industry feedback amid severe overcapacity. The development has emerged amid rivalry between China and the US that has extended into space-based computing powered by solar panels. China has remained home to more than 80% of the world’s solar panel components and the top ten suppliers of equipment to make solar cells.
