Most of us are used to the idea of solar panels on rooftops by now, but one inventor in New Jersey has taken clean energy a step further — and his home might just be a glimpse of what the future looks like.
Mike Strizki founded the Hydrogen House Project, a non-profit based in Hopewell, New Jersey, and built what is considered the first solar-hydrogen powered home in American history. According to the Hydrogen House Project, the system cost around $500,000 to build, but Strizki still lives there today and has been free from the national grid ever since.
So how does it actually work? Solar panels capture energy as normal, but instead of sending excess power to a battery, an electrolyzer converts it into hydrogen gas, which gets stored in tanks on the property. When the home needs power, a fuel cell converts that hydrogen back into electricity and water. That is the entire loop. No emissions, no energy loss over time, and no utility bills.
That last part matters more than it sounds. One of the biggest criticisms of solar power is that stored energy degrades. Hydrogen does not have that problem. The gas just sits there until you need it, which makes it a genuinely compelling option for long-term off-grid living.
Hydrogen is not a new idea, of course. NASA has used it as a rocket fuel for decades, and several car manufacturers are already exploring hydrogen powered vehicles. The difference now is that someone has proven it works at the household level, and the project has grown popular enough to become the subject of an upcoming documentary.
