A timely intervention by Carabinieri officers from the Catania Carabinieri Mobile Radio Unit led to the arrest of a 35-year-old Romanian man, charged with resisting a public officer, receiving stolen goods, and unauthorized possession of altered keys or lock picks. The arrest occurred following an operation involving the transportation of stolen equipment from a photovoltaic system.
It was just after midnight when, during a patrol, a Radiomobile crew noticed a Fiat 600 clearly overloaded (with its suspension completely crushed) traveling along the SP. 69 road toward Scordia. The Carabinieri, suspicious, decided to stop the vehicle, but the driver, noticing the presence of law enforcement, accelerated, initiating a pursuit with sirens blaring. The vehicle continued for approximately two kilometers, with the Carabinieri acting cautiously to avoid accidents, ultimately deciding to block the vehicle.
Despite an attempt to stop the car, the two men inside fled on foot, taking advantage of the darkness and surrounding vegetation. Although the driver managed to escape, the 35-year-old was quickly captured by the Carabinieri, who found him hiding in a hole on a private farm. A search of the car revealed a surprising amount of electrical cables, totaling approximately 2000 meters, likely stolen from one of the area’s photovoltaic systems.
Various tools used in the theft were also found in the vehicle: three crowbars, shears, and wire cutters, typical thieves’ tools. Furthermore, a balaclava was found in the 35-year-old’s pocket, which he likely used to evade video surveillance of the areas involved in the thefts. The car they were traveling in, a Fiat 600, was found to have been stolen in February in Gravina di Catania from a 60-year-old. The owner has already received the returned vehicle.
The 35-year-old was arrested and taken to the Catania prison, while investigations continue to identify the escaped accomplice and determine the two men’s involvement in other similar thefts in the area. This operation further demonstrates the speed and expertise of law enforcement in intercepting criminal activity in the area.
