A new solar farm is set to be constructed on Quincy’s northside after the Quincy City Council approved a special use permit for a 3-megawatt project at 3909 Wisman Lane.
Last week, the council initially tabled the permit for a week to gather more information. Representatives from the company behind the project, Quincy, Illinois Solar 5 LLC, appeared before the council Monday night to answer questions.
While the property is located outside city limits, it falls within the city’s 1.5-mile jurisdiction, giving officials a say in development decisions related to urban sprawl. City officials said the proposed site is well-suited for the project.
“So if we were going to say we could locate one of these, we would say if you put it into an industrial area the city would look more favorable at that because we have that as a special use permit,” one city official said. “There would not be the degree of potential conditions or anything placed on it for that regard.”
Solar projects have faced significant pushback in Adams County in recent years. The company behind this proposal is also responsible for a previous Ellington Road project that the council rejected.
City officials said they have not received any calls or complaints about the new location, noting there are no residential properties nearby.
