Solar power grants relaunched with bids opening for larger projects – Times of Malta

Grants and feed-in tariffs are set to return, with 20-year contracts for larger projects also up for grabs
The government has relaunched existing renewable energy support packages, keeping in place incentives for households and small-scale generators while opening a fresh round of bidding for larger projects.
The package includes household grant schemes for photovoltaic systems and batteries, a feed-in tariff for residential and business installations below 40kWp (Kilowatt-peak – the maximum output for solar panels), while inviting bids for larger renewable energy projects.
For households, the 2026 scheme has a budget of €15.3 million, with €4.1 million going to solar panel systems and €11.2 million for battery storage.
Applications will open on Monday and remain available until November, or until funds run out. The grant options include PV systems with hybrid inverters, hybrid or battery inverters with storage, and battery storage only.
Small-scale systems below 40kWp that do not benefit from a grant will continue to receive a feed-in-tariff of €0.15 per kWh guaranteed for 20 years. Some 8MWp has been allocated to the scheme.
For larger projects, the government will offer 20-year contracts for a premium per kWh generated, with projects selected from a competitive pay-as-bid process based on cost efficiency and available capacity.
Two calls will be issued throughout the year: one for projects between 40kWp and less than 200kW, and from 200kW up to less than 1MW (megawatt). Some 2.5MW will be allocated to the former, and 5000kW for the second.
A total of 15MW will be available for allocation, with the bid price capped at €0.14 /kWh.
A separate call for projects of 1MW or more will be allocated 38MW. The maximum allowed bid price will be between €0.094/kWh and €0.177/kWh, depending on the type and category of project.
The government said equipment compliant with the EU’s Net-Zero Industry Act will qualify for an additional 5% incentive.
The announcement was made by the Energy Ministry and the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS).
