India Adds 36.5 GW Solar Capacity in 2025 – Electronics For You BUSINESS

Rising solar momentum sees India add 36.5 GW in 2025, with over 40 GW expected in 2026, as capacity growth remains concentrated in key states.
India’s solar energy sector continued to expand in calendar year (CY) 2025, with significant additions across utility-scale and rooftop segments, according to a report by JMK Research & Analytics.
By 31 December 2025, the country had commissioned a combined 162.2GW of utility-scale solar and wind capacity, with a further 71.5GW under development. Solar accounted for a substantial share of these installations, alongside steady growth in rooftop deployments.
During calendar year 2025, India added 28.6GW of utility-scale solar capacity and 7.9GW of rooftop and on-site solar installations, indicating sustained momentum in both the centralised and distributed segments. These additions formed the bulk of the new renewable capacity introduced during the year.
State-wise, solar deployment remained concentrated in a few regions. Rajasthan led with 39GW of installed solar and wind capacity, followed by Gujarat at 33.7GW and Tamil Nadu at 22.4GW. Together, these three states contributed 58.6 per cent of total installations, reflecting regional concentration in project development.
In 2025 alone, Rajasthan added 9.5GW of new solar and wind capacity, marginally ahead of Gujarat at 9.4GW, while Maharashtra contributed 6.8GW. Combined, these three states accounted for 73.9 per cent of capacity additions during the year.
Looking ahead, solar capacity is expected to remain the primary driver of renewable expansion. In 2026, around 32.5GW of new utility-scale solar capacity and 8.5GW of rooftop or on-site solar installations are projected to be commissioned, indicating continued growth in both segments.
