Welspun New Energy has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) for a 200 MW solar project integrated with a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This marks the company’s first PPA that includes energy storage, reflecting a shift towards hybrid renewable solutions.
The capacity was secured through a SECI auction held last year at a tariff of INR 2.86 per kWh. Following this agreement, Welspun New Energy’s total contracted portfolio has reached approximately 1.6 GWp.
Under the tender guidelines, each 1 MW of solar capacity must be supported by a minimum of 500 kW/2 MWh of storage. The project can be developed at any location across India, provided it is connected to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).
Battery storage is expected to play a critical role in meeting India’s rising electricity demand. Estimates suggest that solar power combined with storage could meet up to 90 percent of the country’s electricity requirements at a competitive cost of around INR 5.06 per kWh.
To support future demand, India was projected to require nearly 2,560 GWh of battery storage capacity, against an electricity consumption level that exceeded 2,000 TWh in 2024. The increasing integration of storage-backed renewable projects signals a structural shift in how power is generated and delivered in the country.
Welspun New Energy Ltd. (WNEL), part of the diversified Welspun World group, focuses on large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects. The group has a presence across multiple sectors including home textiles, steel pipes, building materials, infrastructure, and logistics.
Last year, the company signed a memorandum of understanding worth INR 13,500 crore with the Odisha government to develop renewable energy projects in the state. The agreement was formalised at the Make in Odisha Conclave 2025 in the presence of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.
