The Polk County Board of Supervisors approved an agreement to develop a new solar field at the county jail, which will end up saving taxpayers millions of dollars.
The solar panels will power 25% of the jail's energy use. After the cost to put them in — $850,000 — the project will save $100,000 a year, and $3 million over the lifetime of the solar field.
“It’s another win-win for taxpayers. The question often is, is going green gonna cost you more? The reality is that this project will save money,” Polk County Board Chair Matt McCoy said.
Three other county buildings — the administration building, Polk County Riverplace and the North Side Community Center — were fitted with solar panels. The total savings in $8 million over 30 years.
The effort is part of Polk County's goal to reduce emissions by 90% by the year 2040. The county’s other initiatives include converting HVAC systems to electric, transitioning to electric vehicles, adding electric charging stations and using 100% LED lighting in county facilities.
