The 31MW Mulwala Solar Farm in New South Wales has been entered into the Australian Energy Market Operator’s Market Management System (MMS).
European Energy Australia developed the project, situated about two kilometers north of Mulwala in the Riverina district. This area, characterized by flat terrain and widespread irrigation, functions as a key agricultural center.
Being listed in AEMO’s MMS is a required step for any generator wanting to join the National Electricity Market (NEM). This status allows the facility to offer dispatch bids, perform commissioning tests, and eventually receive payment for electricity delivered to the grid. The registration shows the site is prepared to start testing and commissioning work, with the asset designated as a semi-scheduled unit within the NEM structure. Under this designation, Mulwala will be actively dispatched via bids submitted to the National Electricity Market Dispatch Engine, allowing full involvement in wholesale market activities.
Work at Mulwala started in the third quarter of 2025, with grid connection planned for April 2026. European Energy obtained the project from Swedish developer OX2 in September 2024, along with the 108MW Lancaster Solar Farm in Victoria. This deal, covering both projects totaling 137MW of combined capacity, was documented in the third quarter of 2024.
The Lancaster solar PV plant was launched last month, marking the company’s first operational utility-scale project in Australia. That installation uses roughly 170,000 solar panels across 172 hectares and is supported by a long-term power purchase agreement with Apple.
In June 2025, European Energy reached financial close on a portfolio financing package exceeding AU$130 million (US$93 million), supplied by Westpac Banking Corporation and DZ BANK, to fund construction of both facilities.
The Mulwala site occupies about one-third of a 215-hectare area, with the rest kept for cattle grazing. This method, known in the industry as agrivoltaics, enables dual land use, preserving farming activities alongside renewable power generation.
Mulwala is anticipated to generate around 66GWh each year. Electricity from the project is secured under a long-term power purchase agreement with Zen Energy, signed in May 2023 as part of a bundled arrangement involving Sustainable Energy Infrastructure and YES Group.
European Energy has also announced plans for a co-located 20MW/40MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the location, designed to enhance grid stability in the area.
