Nagpur Metro Becomes First in India to Install Solar Panels Between Live Tracks – The Live Nagpur

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in the country, Nagpur Metro has installed solar panels between live railway tracks at its Hingna depot, marking a significant step in renewable energy innovation in urban transport. The pilot project, developed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), uses the inter-track space — previously unutilized — to generate clean energy without affecting train operations.
The 200-metre installation, equipped with monocrystalline solar panels of 50 kilowatt peak capacity, is expected to generate nearly 70,000 units of electricity annually and help reduce around 65 tonnes of carbon emissions every year.Officials said the power generated will feed directly into the depot’s internal supply, reducing dependence on the city grid.
The project is being seen as a pioneering model for integrating renewable energy into metro infrastructure, with scope for expansion as Phase-II network development progresses towards Hingna, Kanhan and Butibori.
Nagpur Metro’s innovative move has positioned the city at the forefront of sustainable urban transport initiatives in India.
