The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has issued a tender for 495 megawatts of new solar photovoltaic capacity, according to the source pv-tech.org. The capacity will be distributed across ten separate projects.
Interested parties have until 28 June to submit their bids. Successful bidders will be required to provide a security deposit of approximately US$5,000 per megawatt of awarded capacity. Additionally, all projects must be developed near transmission substations; eight of these substations are currently operational, while two are under construction—one near the town of Cox’s Bazar in southern Bangladesh and another near the city of Tangail in central Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has launched its own tenders previously, including a tender for 77.6 megawatts of solar capacity last week and a 2.6 gigawatt tender last year. However, these efforts have been less successful compared to European tenders. For instance, no bids were submitted for the March 2025 tender, which has raised concerns regarding investor interest in new solar projects within the country.
Renewable energy constitutes a small portion of Bangladesh’s energy mix. In August 2025, renewables accounted for just 4.62% of generation. The government has set a goal to increase this share to 40% by 2050. Officials also hope that domestic electricity generation will cover a larger portion of the nation’s electricity demand in the future.
Data from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) indicates that Bangladesh was a net energy importer in 2025. Furthermore, the BPDB’s payment backlogs for electricity purchased from independent power producers (IPPs) had reached US$2.2 billion by November 2025. Expanding both renewable electricity generation and domestic power sources to reduce dependence on energy imports will be key components of the country’s energy transition.
