What’s the Deal With? The solar panels on Fisherman’s Pavilion – Cascadia Daily News

Eagle-eyed observers may have seen solar panels recently put up on the roof of the Fisherman’s Pavilion in Zuanich Point Park.
The project, which started this spring, is part of Puget Sound Energy’s community solar program. The program makes it possible for PSE customers to buy solar-generated electricity credits for $20 to reduce their overall electric bill and get more power from a clean, renewable source.
The benefit of the program is that the solar panels, like the ones on top of Fisherman’s Pavilion, are placed in public places. That means that renters or homeowners without space for the panels can enroll in the program.
The Port of Bellingham approved the panel placements in October 2025. PSE will have a rooftop lease for 15 years with two five-year renewals. The port has the ability to purchase the panels at the end of the 15 years, should PSE not renew its lease.
The panels have a 100kW output and will cover the entire roof.
