A collaborative effort between Peking University and Alibaba Group‘s Damo Academy has produced a comprehensive map of renewable energy installations across China. The source for this information is a report published by the South China Morning Post.
Researchers utilized an artificial intelligence model developed by Damo to analyze 7.56 terabytes of satellite imagery. This analysis identified 319,972 solar photovoltaic facilities and 91,609 wind turbines located throughout China as of the year 2022. The findings were published in the journal Nature.
The project has resulted in what is described as a first-of-its-kind national inventory of green-energy sites. The inventory is intended to assist in coordinating the country’s transition to renewable energy and could contribute to stabilizing the national power grid amid increasing demand for computing power.
According to a statement from Alibaba, a professor from Peking University noted that this large-scale, high-resolution dataset provides a comprehensive view of the nation’s new-energy landscape, which could support research into power-grid optimization and environmental evaluation.
