GREW Solar, a solar module manufacturer, has applied for the inclusion of its 3.5 GW TopCon G12R solar cell manufacturing capacity at its Narmadapuram, Madhya Pradesh facility under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II for N-Type TopCon Solar PV Cells. The move comes at an important time with industry grappling with a tight market for domestically made cells, with ALMM 2 in force from June 1. Domestically made TOPCon cells and modules, which are gaining market share, are particularly in short suppkly due to this.
Most manufacturers have struggled to manage cell making capacity utilisation over 70% in this scenario, further creating conditions where price hikes are feared. Apart from Grew Solar, fresh capacities of over 6 GW are expected to be added by September this year, which is ex[pected to ease the situation somewhat by December 2026.
The G12R wafer format (210R) is increasingly the new standard in solar manufacturing, following the widely adopted M10 (182 mm) wafer format. Manufacturers believe the G12R format offers higher module efficiency, lower production costs, and improved manufacturing line utilization. The Indian solar module and cell manufacturing sector also notes that the format helps narrow the gap between nameplate capacity and actual output, thereby enhancing overall plant utilization.
Solar cells are the core building blocks of photovoltaic modules and play a critical role in determining the efficiency, reliability, and long-term sustainability of solar projects.
The ALMM framework has been introduced to promote quality, reliability, and traceability across India’s solar sector while encouraging the development of domestic manufacturing capacities. As the industry continues to evolve, investments in solar cell manufacturing are expected to contribute significantly towards building a self-sufficient and future-ready renewable energy ecosystem.
