JA sets new 28.2% efficiency record for BC solar cells – Cleanroom Technology

One of China’s largest photovoltaic cells manufacturers has rebranded as JA and set a new benchmark for back-contact solar technology

JA Solar, which has now been rebranded and changed its name to JA, has announced that its back-contact (BC) solar cells have achieved a certified conversion efficiency of 28.2%, establishing a new record for BC cell technology.
The result was verified by TÜV Rheinland and was achieved using HyperGen technology, which is being jointly developed by JA and Golden Stone Energy.
According to Golden Stone Energy, the breakthrough is based on hybrid back-contact (HBC) technology, which combines conventional BC cell architecture with heterojunction (HJT) passivation structures and tunnelling oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) technology.
The approach integrates the technical characteristics of BC, HJT and TOPCon solar cell designs into a single platform, with the aim of increasing conversion efficiency while simplifying manufacturing processes and improving production stability.
JA said the certified result was achieved by the first batch of HBC cells developed using the technology, demonstrating the potential of the architecture for both efficiency improvements and large-scale engineering applications.
The manufacturing of photovoltaic cells is carried out in tightly controlled cleanroom environments, where airborne particles, temperature and humidity are carefully managed to protect sensitive semiconductor materials and maintain product quality.
Announcing the rebrand of the company at an event in Shanghai last week, Liu Shuo, President of JA’s Brand and Marketing Centre, said the rebrand also indicates a shift from “exporting products” to “building global capabilities.”
“Through reliable products, tailored system solutions, global professional services and consistent long-term value, JA will empower industries worldwide to build a more stable, greener and sustainable energy future,” said Shuo.
Shuo said that manufacturers across China are continuing to invest in next-generation photovoltaic technologies.
Companies including LONGi Green Energy, TCL Zhonghuan and Aiko Solar are expanding production and commercialisation efforts for BC-based products as competition intensifies in the high-efficiency solar cell market.
The latest milestone by JA highlights ongoing advances in photovoltaic manufacturing technologies aimed at increasing energy conversion performance while supporting future industrial-scale deployment.
